The Long Lens Calibration Specialist

Here at Cameracal we see a vast array of different camera / lens combinations. In fact over the last three years and 7000 + calibrations we have probably seen at least one example of every AF lens produced (Canon, Nikon, Sigma and Tamron).

With the advent of spring just around the corner and people preparing for safari's, birding and sports,  photographers clearly are preparing their kit. These last couple of days have been particularly busy with regards longer lenses and this is our specialist area...

Over the last couple of days, we have calibrated the following to various camera bodies

  • 1 x Canon EF 600mm F4
  • 3 x Canon EF 500mm F4’s
  • 1 x Canon EF 400mm F2.8
  • 1 x Canon EF 300mm F2.8

all with 1.4 x and 2 x converters.

Due to the distances required for calibration of these lenses (20 metres from the test target in the case of 800mm +) we have probably one of the largest (or longest) studio facilities available. But even then we have to use the corridor occasionally.

and with the exception of lenses longer than 1000mm a clear location outdoors.

Long Lens Calibration

For situations where we do have to resort to shooting outdoors, we add an additional test to our workflow to ensure we get the very best out of the camera / lens combo.

So what do we do.....

We bracket the + / - calculated calibration results, record test images, drop and crop these images into Photoshop and scrutinise them side by side at 200% enlargement checking for the finest detail (the writing at the bottom of the test target which is 100th of the size of the test target).

Even small variants in terms of front / back focus, calculated adjustments can make a HUGE difference with these long lenses, especially if used wide open and with appropriate 1.4 and 2.0 x converters . (Note a calculated adjustment value of + / - 5 can make a significant difference to the sharpness of your images, more so than on a shorter focal length such as 200mm).

So if you have a long lens and want to ensure the best possible results give us a call, you will not be disappointed...
